With more and more technology being introduced, I find my students being 'stunted' with their lack of access. My students need to be able to have access to the same technology as students in other schools and districts.
My students vary in background and ability.
My school is diverse in population but not diverse in technology. While teachers do the best with what they have, I want to provide more for my students and meet their needs. There is currently one computer lab housing 30 computers for a building that houses approximately 500 students. The lab is only available to my students for 45 minutes every three days. Unfortunately, this is not enough exposure for them to complete projects in class or to extend their learning in the many subjects they learn in class. As well, the timing does not always work well when we need technology 'in the moment' rather than let's wait until something is available.
My Project
My students would use the 4 iPad minis and keyboards (technology) in the classroom for research, ongoing enrichment activities to reinforce their learning, and as a bridge between the classroom and the availability of technology in the outside world. By crossing this bridge, students who do not have access to technology at home will have the ability to experiment with it in a safe and engaging environment. For those students who do have access to technology at home, the iPads in the classroom will let them explore math games and activities that they may otherwise not know about (and then can continue at home).
The iPads and keyboards would allow my students to practice and engage in another way.
They currently only engage with paper and pencil. Technology would open the world to them in a way they are unable to experience right now.
