Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Gifted students from 1st grade through 5th grade My school recently became a STEM school, so we are focusing on enhancing our 21st century skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking! Students in our school come from all types of backgrounds, mainly Hispanic and African American.

My students have a love and passion for learning, they come to school every day charged up and ready to tackle new challenges.

I am amazed by the way they think outside the box to solve problems and by their energy!

The majority of the students at my school are English learners with Spanish being the primary language spoken at home. Over 85% of students also qualify for free lunch. We are a Title I school as well. None of these things hold us back, they just make us shine even brighter!

My Project

As a teacher I am always looking for new ways to keep my students excited and engaged. Escape rooms have become very popular activities to do just that. However, these activities often require that you have actual lock boxes for the kids to open, so my project is to acquire the materials to create my own!

Breakout games are based like escape rooms, and require students to use critical thinking skills, creativity, and collaboration to solve puzzles.

The goal is for the teams to work together to “breakout” by solving all the puzzles. The games are fun in nature, but they also engage students in learning core academics. As the students work together to solve the puzzle, they are learning positive communication and collaboration skills that will be required when working in the real world. As students enter the classroom, they will be given their first clue. The team will work together to solve this clue, and go to the next clue. The puzzles may require students to solve numeric combinations to unlock a lock, use clues to find words to unlock a lock, and other clues may lead the team to a key. Each piece that they complete or figure out, leads them to the next puzzle. Solving each puzzle will reveal a code number that the students will eventually use to unlock a box, access their key, and earn their completion badges.
