You can't control your situation, but you can your education.
Help me give my students rewards for making strides, and taking responsibility for their education by going to tutoring, and reach their educational goals while improving their skills.

My Students
Our students are hopeful. They live in a boys home. They come to us from broken homes, and different situations that are beyond their control. Some have family that put them in a bad situation, some have family they gave them away, and some don't even have family. But despite their situation they keep trying.
One of our mottos in the school program we have for the boys is you might not have control of your current situation, but one thing you do have control of is your education.
Many of them come to us after not being in school for months, and sometimes years. Either from a parent not taking the responsibility of taking them to school or they moved around so much they could never stay on track at the school they were at. Once they get to us we do whatever we can to ensure they are getting a proper education, and doing what we can to close the gaps that they have missed while they have not attended school.
Our program also extends to an afterschool tutoring program. We take the opportunity to give our students one on one attention that they desperately need.
My Project
The group homes program is under the umbrella of alternative education for my school district. Under this umbrella we are provided with funding for materials like books, paper, pencils, calculators, but what we can't use our funding for is rewards.
Some of our students want absolutely nothing to do with school once they come to us which is understandable given the situation they have been placed in.
You have to think if you were taken from your home, and be unsure of what you were going to do in the future school is the last thing on your mind. Some students see school as a means to escape their current situation to them it may be the only normal thing they have.
What we would like to do is give students more incentive for coming to school, and doing great work. Great work deserves to be noticed, and should be rewarded. We have learned over the years that our students love snacks. What teenager doesn't? When they do good on a really difficult test we want to reward them for that. When they went from making D's, and F's to A's, and B's we want to make sure they are getting noticed for that, and getting rewarded with snacks when they do. Snacks can be an excellent motivator, and eventually can turn a student from not wanting to go to school, and not wanting help with their work to actually enjoying school once they realize they are more than capable of doing well in school.
