Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a fourth grade teacher in a elementary school in Los Angeles. The majority of my students are English Language Learners of Hispanic heritage.
My students last year were voracious readers and have torn through almost every book in my small classroom library.
I am creating this project at the behest of one of my students who urged me to get "more interesting books."
As I took inventory of my classroom library at the end of the year, I noticed that not only were my books old and falling apart, the majority of the characters and historical figures referenced were white males and did not represent the experiences of my students or their families.
My Project
"You can't be what you can't see," is a famous quote attributed to Marian Wright Edleman. When my students go into my current classroom library, they do not see themselves represented in the pages of biographies or in the characters of the fiction books that occupy my shelves.
The books I have chosen for my class show Latin people throughout history who have accomplished extraordinary things as well as ordinary characters that share many of the same daily experiences as my students. It is my hope that when my students choose a book from the library, not only do they want to read it but they can see themselves on the pages.
