"You can't be what you can't see," is a famous quote attributed to Marian Wright Edleman. When my students go into my current classroom library, they do not see themselves represented in the pages of biographies or in the characters of the fiction books that occupy my shelves. The books I have chosen for my class show Latin people throughout history who have accomplished extraordinary things as well as ordinary characters that share many of the same daily experiences as my students. It is my hope that when my students choose a book from the library, not only do they want to read it but they can see themselves on the pages.
