Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an old, old high school that has amazing teachers determined to transform it into a school where our students receive a great education. Imagine when you were in high school. Did you have books to read? Probably, but sadly that is not the case with many schools in poverty stricken areas.
The students at our school are truly international.
Over 80% of our population is made up of English language learners from all over the world. In the overall population, over 80% of students live in poverty and most receive free or reduced lunch. Still, our school pulses with excitement and creativity, as expressed through our school academies, dance and drama performances, and cultural events. We just opened our newcomer academy, for students who arrive here, not knowing a word of English. While most US citizens are very accepting of other cultures, many of our newest citizens are not so open and accepting. Thus, it is really important for our students to understand tolerance in our society.
My Project
Reading Kite Runner, Maus, Lord of the Flies, First They Killed my Father & Into Thin Air will help my students in so many ways. For one, these are engaging novels that often "hook" reluctant readers. Furthermore, this text will teach students about the world outside of their immediate surroundings and ideally inspire them to develop compassion for cultures that often spark cruel stereotypical remarks. At the heart of this, I hope to teach the universality of the immigrant experience. They need to understand that the many world cultures have a rich culture, not just the one sided view often portrayed on the 6o'clock news. We desperately need a document camera to show questions, student answers and quizzes. Many rooms do not have white boards to write on. I have personally gone to Home Depot and purchased "shower board" for $7.99 a sheet. We call this the poor man's whiteboard. All students deserve to have the basics to learn. That means books & something that we can project with
Through access to these materials, students will learn to investigate the world, recognize perspectives, and communicate ideas.
We have many students at our school that wear head scarves and gowns that fully cover their bodies. My hope is that these books and technology will provide a level of understanding that reduces the taunting and intolerance due to ignorance of and appreciation of other cultures.
