My classroom is full of 5th graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners. I have students functioning well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students functioning well above grade level. I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
I would love to add a few new titles to our classroom library. A good classroom library should be ever evolving. It should include various types of books and various genres. It should have current novels and classics. It should have books to make you laugh, cry, and think. It should be a place where students love to hang out and talk to others about what book they think should be read next.
Rudine Sims Bishop stated, "Children need books that are mirrors that allow them to see themselves and their own experiences, windows that they can look through to see other worlds that they can then compare to their own, and sliding glass doors that allow them to enter other worlds." Your amazing donation would put books that the mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors into the books of my fifth grade students.
