This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What does it take to help kids stay in school? What motivated you to do well in school? My students usually need a little extra help to stay motivated. Living in an urban, "at-risk" environment can present a lot of challenges to making school a priority. That's where you can help.

Our middle school is in the middle of some of the toughest neighborhoods in Southern California.

My students' homes are surrounded my gangs, drugs, poverty, and bad examples at every street corner. Despite all of this they all want to go to college one day and share their dreams of the future with me. Despite these goals, statistics tell us that 50% of them will become high school dropouts. They also tell us that they make that decision to stay in school or dropout in middle school. That's why staying motivated right now in middle school is so important and helps to close the achievement gap.

My Project

In my Drama class students work together in groups to earn points for being on time to class, bringing all of their supplies, doing their homework, participating in Drama activities, and following our classroom behavior expectations. In Drama we focus on improving observation, concentration, trust, imagination, self-confidence, and ensemble building skills. Things that are not only important in my class, but will also lead to life skills that will help them in the future. At the end of the week, the group with the most points earns a raffle ticket. An iPod Touch would be a fantastic top prize for this raffle and would motivate my students to do their best each and every day.

By motivating students to do well in my class you are not only motivating them to succeed in education but you are also helping them to succeed in learning for life.

Students are far less likely to drop out of school if they feel successful and a part of a group that works to help them become their best. My Drama class can help to do this for students with your help in motivating them. Please help my students and be the change you want to see. You can make a difference.
