My Students

There is so much power in group work and solving problems together. Imagine being able to have your teacher listen in on your discussion as you work to solve a problem, hearing your thinking and the thinking of the others in your group.

My students are a dynamic and diverse group of 6th graders.

We live in a culturally and economically diverse suburban area, and my students reflect this diversity. Our students speak many different languages at home and we have students in the sixth grade working on becoming English proficient along with mastering challenging curriculum. We spend quite a bit of time working in groups to solve problems and receive instruction. They learn to work well together in groups and find working in groups rewarding. My students are getting ready for middle school and are often lively and full of energy and want to be heard.

My Project

I am requesting 6 recorders for my classroom. Providing a way for students to unobtrusively record what they are thinking and how they are solving problems will free up students from having to record what they do on paper. It will give me, the teacher, a much better idea of each student's understanding of a particular concept and how they are working together in a group. Using a recording device will allow my students to feel free to focus on the problem at hand, or the task they have been given, and spend less time and energy on making sure they have the right thing written down. In addition, in a classroom of diverse language learners, it will allow students to participate in lively conversations that can be reviewed to monitor for language growth and developing conversational skills, as well as foster pro-social skills for group interactions.

Recorders will allow me, as the teacher, to do the impossible and be in many places at once.

I can spend time with a group that may be struggling and still know that I will be able to hear every group, and their thinking will be heard and validated. Knowing that each group will be recorded, each voice heard, is empowering to the student, possibly freeing them to take more risks and become better problem solvers and group participants.
