You Can Go Anywhere In a Book!

My students need books, period! They have no books at home and are desperate for things to read. We also need a shelf and bins to organize the books.

My Students

Have you ever lost yourself in a book? Cried while reading an emotional story? Became sad when a good story was finished and wished it could go on forever? I want my students to feel this way but they have a major problem: no books at home to read! No books=No reading. Talk about sad stories!

All of my students live below poverty level.

Many of them have one parent or live with non-parental family members. Many live in high stress homes. For many English is not their home language. Some of them rely on pubic assistance for food and health care. Many of my children get themselves up, dressed, and to the bus stop without parental help or support. School lunch and breakfast may be the most nutritious meals of the day. So, if it comes to keeping your electricity on, buying food for your family or buying books for your children to read, which would you choose? Yet...my students thrive in class. They love to come to school. They feel safe and loved. We hug on them, listen to them, and comfort them. But most importantly we teach them. We teach them that reading can take them anywhere. We get them excited about learning to read. They treasure the books I have at school, but they need to have books at home to read also.

My Project

My school recently read the professional book, The Book Whisperer. It talked about the importance of having books at home to foster the love of reading. Not just any books, but books that have characters and subject matter that is of high interest to the students. Being an avid reader myself and remembering my childhood, we always had books at home that I was eager to read. Because of the reality of my student's lives, they do not have books or access to books at home. My students beg to take books home, but I don't have the variety or materials to provide this for my students. How can they become fluent readers if they can't practice! These books for which I am asking your help contain characters that my children love like Clifford, Arthur, and Pete the Cat. There is a variety of fiction and non-fiction, plus books that have cultural material that my students will be able to relate to. They will be able check them out, take them home, read to family, and practice their reading.

How can reading not change a child's life?

As I constantly tell my first graders, you have to read to live! By having these books in my classroom and enabling the children to take them home, they will learn that reading is not just something that they do in school that is required and can be boring but that reading is a way to learn about things that excite, interest, or inspire you!
