All of my students live below poverty level. Many of them have one parent or live with non-parental family members. Many live in high stress homes. For many English is not their home language. Some of them rely on pubic assistance for food and health care. Many of my children get themselves up, dressed, and to the bus stop without parental help or support. School lunch and breakfast may be the most nutritious meals of the day. So, if it comes to keeping your electricity on, buying food for your family or buying books for your children to read, which would you choose? Yet...my students thrive in class. They love to come to school. They feel safe and loved. We hug on them, listen to them, and comfort them. But most importantly we teach them. We teach them that reading can take them anywhere. We get them excited about learning to read. They treasure the books I have at school, but they need to have books at home to read also.
