You Can Do It: Reading 30, 40+ Books This Year!

Help me give my students titles they have recommended to their peers, titles that will help each student to read dozens of books this year!

My Project

I teach a wonderfully diverse group of mostly ninth-grade students. Many will be the first in their family to attend college, and I'm so excited to help them towards that dream. At the start of the school year, I challenged my English as a Second Language (ESL) students to read 30 books independently, and I challenged my Honors students to read 40 books. Most of the students are making great progress towards this goal, and I want to give them amazing books to help them keep up their momentum! I asked my students in a survey what their favorite book has been so far this year, and the novels in this project are straight from that list.

We quietly read self-selected novels every day in my classroom, and these nonfiction, graphic novel, and manga titles are ones that my students love and have recommended to one another.

Peer recommendations are a powerful tool to engage readers, from the most reluctant reader to the most avid one.

I've already compiled and posted a list of these titles near our class bookshelves to help students find their next favorite book, but we don't have most of the titles in our classroom. If you donate some of these books, we can put them on the shelves right in front of the kids and make it that much easier for them to keep reading up a storm!

The donated books will become a permanent part of our classroom library for students to read in class or to check out and read at home. Helping to build strong readers each year is the most rewarding part of my work as a teacher. Thank you for helping to make this happen!
