Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a beautifully culturally/racially/linguistically diverse, low-income, high-need public school. I (and another teacher) work with 40 students each day. Almost all my students are English Learners who enjoy hands-on, playful experiences to help them soak up new vocabulary and academic concepts.
We need something to count on- literally! As my kindergarten students develop number sense and learn to count, order, recognize, and compare numbers, they need something to count. Our math workbooks are in black and white and totally 2-dimensional. My students crave realia and texture- something they can grab onto when they count. Using their fingers can get quite limited once we pass 10.These hands-on, exciting materials will make abstract numbers come to life.
The math materials I have selected are so inviting- cakes, cookies, beads, and animals!I know my students eyes will light up as they count out these engaging and highly motivating manipulatives. Kids learn best when presented with inviting resources that peak their interest. I love that these math games and centers require my students to do partner work, enabling them to increase their math vocabulary, oral language, and cooperation skills as they practice math standards around number sense. Since these math materials are so user-friendly, my students' parents will be able to jump right in and help if they volunteer in the classroom.
Your donation and support will open up a world of meaningful math for my students. As we know about kids, and adults too, we never forget what we learn with pleasure. So, help me take the rote out of math and engage my students with these centers and manipulatives that will motivate and captivate my young ones.
