Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the bravest students on campus because of the many challenges they take and the growth they make from the first day of school to the last. They perform in front of different audiences over 4 times a year and never hide from the stage. My favorite moment with them is the end of the year because of the stories they share about presenting in front of other classes without having any fears.
Sometimes it's not about what kind of person they are in my class, but what kind of human they become in their own lives.
My students have the biggest smiles and friendliest attitudes at the school. We promote and welcome anyone who seems different or "weird" on campus. We collaborate with other groups on campus and help create a positive environment on campus. Often times, my students would often prefer to live at school than to go home...we actually have had slumber parties on the stage! Haha! The theatre department is a place to have friends, a family, a purpose, and to learn skills to give them a future career.
My Project
I am seen as a mom to many of my students. I like to make them smile, learn about their hobbies, let them vent about their families, and cry about their loss of friendships. I have even visited a students house after he shared with friends he thought about ending his life. Life sometimes sucks, but there are some topics that I don't know much about and I would like references for both myself and my students.
The self-help books discuss topics such as depression, introverts, girl (and boy) power, growing up, gender issues, and self-esteem.
These are all topics I watch them experience, hear them talking about, and that I am asked to help them with. I have previewed the books and they all respectfully discuss the topics through questions, cartoons, stories, and examples.
