My Students
My students are the best! They come from the inner city of Boston, where the poverty level is high. The majority of them wake themselves up before 7 in the morning to catch buses and trains or to walk long distances for a 7:40 am start.
These middle school students have many factors affecting their lives outside the classroom so at our school, in my classroom, we create a safe environment where they can excel.
These kids have amazing energy and spirit. They want to learn and do their best. They need teachers to create a place for them to do that while still being kids.
My students are English Language Learners. My students have Special Needs. My students are Amazing.
My Project
I teach in the Boston Public schools. My students have special needs, they speak a variety of languages, and they come from a variety of communities. I absolutely cherish the relationships that I have made with these children and their families. I have learned as much from them as they have learned from me. But there is also a great deal of trauma that these students have experienced in their short lives.
It is imperative that these children learn not only math and reading, but also how to take care of their minds.
I took a course in the Summer of 2018 to become a certified Yoga instructor and to incorporate wellness and social emotional learning practices to my students. In teaching students wellness, I will also be teaching them how important they are as individuals. I will be teaching them how to be hero's to themselves and to those around them; how to advocate for their hearts and in turn to treat others with respect and love as well. It's imperative that we arm these students with skills to be wonderful people, not just good test takers.
I have been meditating for only a few short years. It was incredible how quickly meditating for only a short period of time each day helped to keep my mind clear when in stressful situations. I found starting with yoga to be a perfect match with learning to meditate. I need mats and blocks to begin a regular practice with my students. It has become clear to me, that if I can help my students to learn how to incorporate mindfulness and yoga into their own lives, they will grow as people, as students, and as members of a community.
