Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a 100% free and reduced price lunch, Pre-K-3 through 5th grade school, at the heart of Washington, DC. This school year, I teach kindergarten and 1st grade reading intervention to a group of focused and motivated students, who despite disadvantages, work hard to catch up in literacy, rising above the challenges of disabilities, language delays and more.

My priority is to create safe spaces for students to express themselves, work through trauma, and explore how to live their happiest and best lives.

We push through challenges in academics and life as a team, struggling often, celebrating always, and above all, never giving up. Social-emotional learning and culture-building are key in breaking through the blocks that stop students from attending school and valuing their learning.

My Project

This conference is for teachers who bring yoga, mindfulness and SEL practices to their students. The conference features presenters from organizations and institutions that have been at the forefront of kids yoga, mindfulness, and SEL in education. Through attending, I will learn about innovative approaches, pioneering research and explore a wealth of new tools to support my vision of this work in my community.

I will collaborate in this unique forum with educators, administrators, mental health professionals, yoga teachers, therapists, researchers, parents, and teens interested in teaching yoga, mindfulness, and SEL in their communities.

Weekend Overview

* Friday, April 17th we will kick off the conference weekend in the evening with a fun and empowering networking event.

* Saturday, April 18th is a full day of amazing Keynote Speakers and a selection of break-out sessions

* Sunday, April 19th is an all-day teacher training, being led by experts in the kids yoga and mindfulness community.

I look to bring this work back to my students through our weekly yoga and mindfulness school enrichment model (SEM) cluster, and broader community impact work.
