Yoga Mats Needed For Self-Regulation - Title I School
Help me give my students enough yoga mats for a class. I take the synergies between occupational therapy and hatha yoga to create a fun, playful and therapeutic practice for kids to enhance emotional regulation in the schools.
My students attend their local public kindergarten through eighth grade school. This small rural school serves 58% of the student body free and reduced lunch. The school has approximately 25% who are served in special education and LAP and is also a Title I school. In order to thrive, this school has relied on community and volunteer support. Many of these students show signs of dysregulation as evidenced by inattention, anxiety, frustration, sensory defensiveness, and sensory seeking behaviors.
These students would benefit from having opportunities to learn self-regulation strategies, so that they may enhance the necessary skills required in order to thrive in the educational environment.
My Project
Currently, the kids are slipping around the hard linoleum surface in the gym which is frustrating. I have used the gym for my yoga / mindfulness classes, yet the children are limited to doing only a few poses due to lack of equipment like yoga mats. I have found cost effective yoga mats through DICKS Sporting Goods that would work to effectively and safely ground, support, and allow the students to practice and deepen their experiences.
To have access to slip-proof mats, students would be able to enhance their practice, and work to build their sense of self, and bolster confidence, self-regulation, and learn strategies for managing stress, anxiety and peer pressure.
