My Students

"Imagination is more powerful than knowledge," Einstein said, and I believe he was right. Where would we be without the great inventors utilizing their imagination and creativity to dream up all of the wonderful advances that we often take for granted? My Drama students are encouraged to dream big.

Living in a low economic urban neighborhood can be challenging and present many obstacles.

Often times students enter my classroom distracted with worries about gangs in their neighborhood, a family provider out of work, or drug and alcohol issues in the home. Many students in our district have been qualified as having PTSD just because of the neighborhoods they grow up in. With all of this going on, it can be a challenge for them to concentrate, to day dream about what they want to do with their life, or maybe like Einstein, advance the world with their not-yet-thought-of theories. I have sought to help students with this by bringing in meditation and yoga to my Drama classes as a focusing exercise. I have found that this helps them to quiet and center themselves, and enables them to have space to imagine and create instead of worry. But without mats to use for these exercises, the task has been challenging and the experience for the students not what it could be

My Project

A class set of yoga mats would really help my students to be able to participate in yoga and meditation and to practice it the way it was meant to be done. It would allow them to have a reprieve from the stresses that the outside world may present, improve their concentration in their other classes, and offer all of the health benefits that we know come from this type of exercise. Considering that most people die from stress, they could model a new type of behavior to their families and possibly change the community! What a powerful possibility.

Your donation for a class set of yoga mats for my Drama class would enable us to practice yoga and meditation and will have a huge impact on my students lives.

It will help us to learn these life long practices that will enable students to overcome the obstacles that they face and allow them to thrive. Who knows? It just might allow that great next inventor the space to imagine that next big world changing invention!
