I am a NYC Teaching Fellow and Special Education teacher serving children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a public school setting in Queens, NY. The children range in ages from 8 to 11 years old. Autism is a developmental disorder that appears within the first three years of a child's life. It is a disorder that makes it difficult for children to communicate verbally and non-verbally, to socially interact with others and to relate to the outside world. Autism used to be a rare disorder affecting 1 in 1500 children. Today autism has risen tremendously in the United States and other countries. Currently the estimates put autism at an alarming rate of 1 in 500 children in the U.S. and even higher in some states at 1 in 150 (CA and NJ). I am a strong advocate of yoga in the classroom because it helps reduce behaviors that include but are not limited to tantrums, hurting others, self-injurious behaviors and other stimulatory behaviors. Yoga is an excellent form of behavioral intervention. It also helps bring the child out of the world that he or she disappears into. We use yoga as an instrument to connect with the children and gain their complete confidence. Yoga helps bring the autistic child out of his or her shell and into the world of social interaction. The deep relaxation techniques that yoga offers helps strengthen the children's nervous system, increase overall health and facilitate the development of body awareness and concentration and social skills. We desperately need mats for the children in order to expand our yoga exercises. The children are currently doing yoga from their seats and are limited to the exercises and cannot benefit fully from the true purpose of yoga. Yoga should be a wonderful, relaxing experience for the children so that they can concentrate and focus more readily on the functional lessons that will pave the way to living a more independent life. We tried to use the gym and the limited mats that are available, however, the gym is not available to us because it is always occupied with classes. In addition, the physical education curriculum does not incorporate yoga so yoga is limited to my classroom activities. Please help fund our needs for these mats and know that the end result of your generosity is an overall improvement in the quality of life of these children and more in the years to come.
