Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is important to teach children at a young age how to self regulate when feeling sad, angry, frustrated, hungry, experiencing unfairness, etc. Their body language and interactions are chaotic and overwhelming. Self-regulation is a part of healthy emotional development and academic growth.

My students are simply awesome!

I have a group of 25 amazing 1st graders at an urban school. Most of my students are considered English Language Learners and receive free/reduced lunch. We are in a Title 1 school and extremely under funded. My students have experienced trauma such as witnessing violence at home, in the neighborhood, or lost a loved one to gang related violence. They come with so many feelings and emotions without a positive strategy to cope and make sense of their experiences.

My Project

Research states, "if we are good at self-regulating, we are able to sustain a feel-good, optimal state of attention; we can organize our thinking and coordinate our actions to accomplish desired goals; we can manage stress, navigate emotions, and control our impulses" (Berry, pg. 1). It is my goal to help my 1st graders find a place where they can experience negative feelings and cope with it positively. Too often the solution is aggression. The yoga mats provide a safe place for each student to be in their bubble as we learn coping techniques to help us with feelings, transitions, and social skills. The practice of mindfulness will occur at the end of each transition (5 a day). By having the yoga mats, students will be more willing to participate which "enables kids to develop an awareness of their inner state and the ability to soothe and refresh themselves." (Berry, pg.1)

By having yoga mats, my students will be able to participate in mindfulness more consistently.

The exercises will lower anxiety and allow students to find positive ways to cope with their feelings. The act of mindfulness will also provide a safe learning environment where everyone feels a part of a community. "Every time you support kids in consciously resetting and recharging their nervous systems is an investment in a more thoughtful, harmonious, and self-regulated classroom" (Berry, pg. 1).
