This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As an English Language Arts teacher in a high school that serves a diverse and hardworking student body, I’m always seeking new ways to bring calm, focus, and deeper learning into our classroom. Today, I’m writing to ask for your help in turning our reading and reflection time into something extraordinary—with the simple addition of yoga mats.

Our goal is to create a more peaceful, restorative environment where students can feel physically at ease while growing mentally and emotionally.

With your donation, we plan to introduce a new classroom routine that blends yoga and silent reading.

Why combine yoga and literacy? Because both practices require concentration, inner stillness, and self-awareness. Many of our students come to school carrying the weight of external stress—whether from academic pressure, home life, or the fast pace of teen life in general. Giving them a physical and emotional reset through yoga can help open their minds and hearts to the power of reading and writing.

The benefits are supported by research: yoga improves self-regulation, attention span, and emotional resilience—all of which directly support reading comprehension and writing skills. Reading while physically comfortable also increases stamina and enjoyment, which we know leads to stronger literacy growth.

These mats will become permanent fixtures in our classroom for years to come. Whether we’re using them to begin a mindful poetry lesson, reflect after a challenging novel, or just settle into a good book, they will help us transform our classroom from a rigid space into one of choice, comfort, and connection.
