This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a Comprehensive Special Education Program.

My student population consists of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities.

Working with this population can be difficult, but it is super rewarding within this environment. I teach the most interesting, well-behaved scholars ever! My school is a student-centered environment filled with "World-Class Teachers"! This will be my fifth year but on day one, I knew this school was home. As a team, we are continuously brainstorming ways to evolve as educators, and we are also advocates for family involvement in the learning process!

My Project

Each morning my students enter the classroom and we have a morning meeting all together to start our day. This is when we circle up on the rug, greet each other, share something if we wish and do a quick activity as a whole class. I am requesting yoga mats and illustrated literature because I would love to extend morning meeting to incorporate yoga practices.

Yoga will help my students connect with their bodies and regain control over their minds and their learning at the start each school day.

It is my belief that students cannot learn if they are unable to access inner peace and self worth. Also, participating in yoga is not typically something my students have experienced and doing so, provides them with an opportunity to engage in exercise from another culture! These yoga mats will help me incorporate yoga, stretching and meditation practice into my classroom to help my unique and individual students access their education and stimulate learning experiences through positive mental health.
