My Project

We have been successfully incorporating yoga into our classrooms! We are asking for 25 yoga mats, so we have enough mats for students in our classrooms to do a yoga class together. Our students have been doing "Yoga Thursdays" and participate in a short yoga class during our quiet time portion of the day.

The purpose of this project is to combat social-emotional challenges that students across our district face.

With this project, there are a lot of possibilities. Mrs. Madison Wells and Mrs. Trista Huth would love the capability of taking yoga instruction outside of our classrooms as well. With this appropriate equipment, we would be interested in leading yoga practices in different settings, including future SEL days. While these materials may be housed in our classrooms, they would be offered to other classroom teachers to take advantage of at any time.

Along with the various physical benefits of yoga, including flexibility, strength, and coordination, yoga is also an effective tool to promote SEL learning within the classroom. This structured exercise, requires students to follow directions through oral and kinesthetic learning. Key benefits of yoga being used within the classroom include:

1. Developing Self- Awareness- Yoga is designed in a way to help students understand what is happening in their bodies and how that affects what they are thinking and feeling.

2. Build Self- Confidence- Each yoga practice allows students opportunities to try new challenges, cope with failure/mistakes, and try again. Providing students with the chance to improve will allow students to feel stronger, more capable and confident in their abilities both on and off the mat.

3. Improve Focus and Concentration - Yoga allows students to work on and improve their focus and concentration by challenging students to be present in the moment.
