Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a community of high poverty and violence, and our students carry a lot of trauma. We are a 100% Free and Reduced Lunch public school, and many of our students eat breakfast, lunch, and even dinner at the school. Our school population is made up of immigrant families from Mexico, Guatemala, Yemen, Afghanistan, and students of African descent.
They try so hard to do their best, and they show love and hope, even in the toughest of circumstances.
My Project
I am a yoga and mindfulness prep teacher, and I serve the entire school of 380 students. Each class comes to me once a week, I go into classrooms twice a month to teach mindfulness, and I do small group work with those students who need it. There are students who are holding so much trauma and who have such a hard time with transitions, change, being in their bodies, etc. that they also need small group instruction.
Yoga with coordinated breathing gives kids the chance to come back to their bodies and to gain skills and tools they can use in everyday life.
I teach whole class lessons and I pull small groups of 1-3 students and we work together to bring calmness, focus, compassion, and the skills to self-regulate so that kids can make calm, well thought-out decisions, rather than impulsive ones that do not serve them.
