Yoga For Children With Autism

My students need yoga materials so we can start a yoga program to address their sensory integration issues and help them be more successful in their school environment.

My Students

Imagine being so overwhelmed with sounds, textures, lights, etc. in your environment that you are unable to focus and attend to the task at hand? That's how many of our students with Autism feel every day at school. Yoga will provide them with an appropriate sensory diet to help them be successful

I work in the inner city with students in grades 2nd - 5th grade who have Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Most of our families live in poverty and the majority of the children at our school receive free and/or reduced lunch. My students all spend the majority of their school day in mainstream programming with support from special education staff. They receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, and adapted physical education in addition to academic and behavior support throughout their day. They are absolutely amazing young people who are trying their hardest every day to be active participants in their environment.

My Project

I have requested a classroom yoga kit, along with a yoga children's book and a yoga DVD for kids to help jump start a yoga program for my students with Autism. The yoga program I would like to start would be built into our daily schedule to address sensory integration issues for my students. The hope is to help students develop vestibular and proprioceptive sensory systems which support intellectual, social and personal development. Yoga can also help children with Autism develop self-awareness, improve concentration, calm their nervous systems which can help them self-regulate, encourages communication and social interactions and much more! By teaching children how to activate and calm their bodies as needed, children grow more able to find their optimum arousal levels for learning.

Yoga can have such a calming effect on any child, especially a child with Autism.

Incorporating yoga into my students' daily routine will teach them how to relax, nurture and regulate emotion, increase physical fitness, self-confidence and self-esteem, improve concentration and imagination, enhance communication, teach them empathy, and help them improve on their teamwork and leadership skills!
