This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning we start off our day by going around the room and saying good morning to each other. We start our day in this way because we are a community of learners and members of a community acknowledge each other.

My students are a group of beautiful, imaginative, kind, and capable boys and girls.

They are in fifth grade. After this year they will be leaving elementary school and entering the big world of middle school. Our school is in a densely populated urban area.

My Project

The benefits of yoga are well researched and documented. My students are subject to many stressors both academically and socially. Practicing yoga can address and alleviate these stressors. Having yoga mats will allow us to practice yoga communally. Yoga will teach the students about their bodies, how to quiet their minds and how to listen to their thoughts and feelings. The practice of yoga provides a platform for social and emotional well being which in turn enhances academic success.

Currently, I use yoga for brief periods (five minutes or less) when I determine that the students have been sitting too long or are otherwise having difficulty focusing on the task at hand.

If we had yoga mats I would be able to use an extended period of time during P.E. to allow the kids to fully experience the benefits of yoga, physically and emotionally. Finally, yoga is non competitive and allows all students regardless of their abilities to fully participate in a physical activity.
