This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured. ” B.K.S. Iyengar This is the lesson my students learn by practicing meditation and Yoga in my Theatre Arts classroom. But we don't have enough Yoga mats for everyone and we need your help.

Living in an underserved urban neighborhood can be challenging and present many obstacles.

Often times students enter my classroom distracted with worries about gangs in their neighborhood, a family provider out of work, or drug and alcohol issues in the home. With all of this going on, it can be a challenge for them to concentrate, to day dream about what they want to do with their lives, or maybe like Einstein, advance the world with their not-yet-thought-of theories. I have sought to help students with this by bringing in meditation and yoga to my Theatre Arts classes as a focusing exercise. I have found that this helps them to quiet and center themselves, and enables them to have space to imagine and create instead of worry.

My Project

Last year, with the help of DonorsChoose, I was able to get a class set of Yoga mats and students loved doing their Yoga! It allowed them to have a reprieve from the stresses of the outside world and it improved their concentration in their other classes. They were able to build self-confidence by improving and challenging themselves with the different Yoga positions and with their increasing ability to focus. Seeing how calm and peaceful they were at the end of class as they lay in Savasana pose with their eyes closed, brought a smile to my face and occasionally tears to my eyes. Some of the students then went on to model this new type of behavior to their families. With our Yoga practice we were potentially changing the community! But with the recent budget cuts to education, my class sizes have been increased by a large amount. We are now short about 10 Yoga mats and I am unable to teach this practice this year unless I can get your help.

Your donation for 10 more Yoga mats and Yoga teaching supplies would enable us to practice Yoga and meditation, and will have a huge impact on my students' lives.

It will help my students to learn these life long practices that will enable them to overcome the obstacles that they face and allow them to thrive.“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” ― Mahatma Gandhi. You can help my students to become their very best. Please help.
