Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teaching 23 second graders this year at an economically disadvantaged school in Los Angeles. Many of my students are not getting enough daily physical activity and this is affecting their overall well-being. It is affecting their self-esteem, ability to focus, and energy levels in the classroom as well as on the playground. We are mandated to teach 100 minutes of physical education per week, but due to the lack of space on our yard, it is difficult to implement a consistent and effective program. This year, in order to eliminate the space issue, I would like to implement a yoga program in my classroom. We would be able to do yoga on a daily basis -rain or shine. I would like to start integrating yoga into my daily routine to help my students gain strength and flexibility in both mind and body. In order to do this, I would need a yoga mat for each child. I am hoping to receive between 23 - 35 yoga mats. With 35 yoga mats, I would make the mats available to the fourth and fifth grade classes at my school as well. After taking a workshop on how yoga can be beneficial for students and speaking with other yoga practitioners, I truly believe that it can make a huge impact on my students' academic and social lives. In addition, I think yoga will help me become a better teacher by giving me some tools to deal with behavior issues in the classroom in a more positive manner.
