Yoga and Mindfulness for Happy and Healthy Lives

My students need yoga mats and yoga pose cards for our weekly practice, and a yoga pose game to use daily during choice time or for quick wiggle breaks during class.

My Students

My kindergartners and first graders will be working hard on learning to read, write, be part of a global community, and more every day. Our school is an international school. We have two target languages, Spanish and Mandarin. My students spend half of their day in my literacy class, which is taught in English, and the other half in math and science, which is taught in their target language. It is one of my goals to deliver a curriculum to my students that speaks to the whole child.

So much of what is going on in the world can get in the way of remembering to take time to listen to what our bodies are telling us.

We forget about the self care that is so crucial in having a well-rounded, happy, and healthy life. The importance of finding balance and peace within ourselves is one that I want to instill in my students this year through yoga and Mindful Movement practice. The younger we teach kids to do this, the more beneficial it will be to countless areas of their lives. It will help them to understand how important these practices are as the academic ones.

My Project

I will be doing a weekly yoga practice with both of my classes this year. We will be finding a room in the school to lay out our mats and look more deeply within ourselves. Through guided yoga instruction, we will be able to start a practice that I hope will follow my students throughout their entire lives. I will be using the yoga pose cards to help guide the instruction.

While we will be doing intentional guided practice once a week, we will be working yoga and mindfulness into the rest of our daily activities.

We will have a yoga center during choice time. Students will be able to use the yoga pose spinner to do this. We will also use the yoga pose cards and Mindful Movements as ways to take wiggle breaks throughout the day.

My students will benefit in so many ways from these daily and weekly practices. They will be able to find ways in which they can recenter and refocus on their work. They will be able to find ways to problem solve and manage stress. This will hopefully spark an interest and love for yoga and finding balance and peace within oneself that will follow them throughout the rest of their lives.
