My Students

My students are the most wonderful kids in the world! Really! They are a very diverse population: African-American, Arabic, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native American...at least 20 languages or dialects are represented. We are a true melting pot population which is approximately 1,150 strong.

We are a Title 1 school with at least 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs.

Many of our families are lead by a single parent, a grandparent or a recent immigrant who work at low-wage jobs and, frequently, multiple jobs just to "put food on the table".

My Project

I am an elementary general and instrumental music teacher. I teach approximately 150 - 175 students per day. Usually these students are making music and it is difficult for them to hear my instructions unless I completely stop all sound. Often, it is a simple instruction that, if it could be heard, the music would continue uninterrupted and the adjustments would be made.

For many years I have been able to project my voice so it could be heard above the music but after 35 years of teaching it has become much more difficult.

Colleagues have suggested a personal amplification device. After researching available systems, the Amplivox Belt Blaster looks like it will "fit the bill".
