My Students
I have a wonderful group of students in a Title I school. Most of my students are native Spanish speakers and spend half of the day in a Spanish classroom and the other half of the day in an English classroom (my classroom) making them fully bilingual in Spanish and English by ninth grade.
All of my students come from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds.
All of my students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Although their parents work a lot to make ends meet, they are still very involved in their child's education because they know that education = success.
My students are a family. They go through the same struggles and face very similar challenges. Most of them have been together since kindergarten and will continue together until high school graduation because of the way our school's dual immersion is set up. My students are "my kids" and I want to do anything and everything I can to help them be successful.
My Project
My students have had an amazing first half of the year, but as the second half approaches, they are having a harder time staying on task! The curriculum has gotten more challenging and it has become more difficult for many students to stay on task and focused. Another thing that has increased has been negative behaviors outside at recess which has then carried into the environment of the classroom.
As a first grade teacher, I use incentives and prizes only as a last resort for student behavior.
I always try to get my students to be intrinsically motivated and to do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do. However, because of the increasing behaviors and lack of focus I've been seeing, I think it's time to bring in incentives and prizes. I’m including erasers they can use in class, bendy pencils (class use), glow in the dark rings, bubble wands, sticky fingers, slime, pinch balloons, slap bracelets, animal erasers, relaxing balls (for my more anxious students), and whistles. All of the non-school related prizes are prizes they can take home and show their families.
My students helped me pick out the prizes that they would love to have in our "store." They earn dollars for working hard and being an example to others. They can then use those dollars to buy prizes from our store. Our store has been closed for a while because of lack of prizes, but this project will help us say "YES, WE ARE OPEN" and will help re-motivate the students to give their best every day!
