This is my first year teaching fifth grade music although I have taught many of these students at their local elementary school. These students enter our middle school with a good background in basic music skills. They can read rhythms and sight read simple songs. They have experience playing and creating music on the instruments that are available at the elementary level.
Students are excited and engaged when using classroom instruments.
The eagerly tackle new skills while working with instruments. We currently have very few instruments available for the general music program at the middle school level. This is something I would like to change beginning with the purchase of a classroom set of Ukuleles.
My Project
A classroom set of Ukulele will enhance their general music experience by giving them a chance to use some instruments that are currently not available to them. They will be excited and engaged as they incorporate them as part of the music program.
With these Ukulele the students will learn skills that will help them become better musicians and more creative individuals.
The students will have an exciting way to learn about chords and how the harmonic elements of music work. They will have an opportunity to use these skills to accompany themselves and create their own music. I am so excited to have the opportunity to share the Ukulele with my students this year.
