Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The vast majority (over 90%) are minority students, and over half come from economically disadvantaged households. In total, I teach five classes of 8th grade English.
My students are bright, funny, optimistic, and creative, with diverse talents and strengths.
My students have thrived on visual thinking routines. I would like to increase the use of visual thinking in my classroom, as well as replace the old desks that we currently have in the classroom.
My Project
Help me replace old, shabby student desks with whiteboard tables and chairs. Whiteboard tables are fun and exciting for students and allow them to creatively express ideas and track their thinking. Our new tables and chairs will provide opportunities for student movement, collaboration, regrouping and flexible seating.
Whiteboard tables can help increase student engagement and actually help them remember and internalize concepts by giving them the opportunity to create mind maps, use sketchnotes and explore concepts with visual cues.
These tables will also increase the collaborative learning opportunities in my classroom, allowing students to more easily work, share ideas and create projects in small groups. Finally, my students will benefit from being able to work one-on-one or in small groups with a teacher for scaffolding and differentiation.
