My students need to enter the world of coding in an engaging, developmentally appropriate, 100% screen-free way and also strengthen their communication skills with Botley the Coding Robot and Action Challenge Activity Packs to share collaboratively.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an energetic, inquisitive and enthusiastic group of 26 five and six-year-olds in the inner city of Rhode Island. They are eager to learn to read and write and count to 100! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class. We learn from each other every day. My school is working hard to build community among families and staff and we have a safe, respectful environment.
My Project
The Botley Coding Robot and Action Challenge Activity Pack has proven to be an engaging and effective way for young children to enter the world of coding in a safe and developmentally appropriate way. We have one in our classroom which was graciously donated and we have already been able to teach our Botley to draw a shape by creating our own program with sequences and simple loops. We also planned and conducted an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths and different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. It is a wonderful way for the children to practice graphing and data analysis. We are truly strengthening our STEM skills now that we have added “Botley Time!” to our day! The children wish we had a couple more so they wouldn’t have to wait so long for a turn. Since we have 26 students it would be truly a coding dream come true to be able to divide the children into 3 groups and all be fully engaged as each group works together to code, collaborate and learn!
