Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in downtown Stockton, CA. We have a Spanish-English dual immersion program in grades Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Since the dual immersion program's inception in 2010, it has doubled in size. It's wonderful to hear our students from English and Spanish speaking backgrounds interacting in both languages.
At our school, 100% of our students qualify for free lunch because they primarily come from low socioeconomic households.
Because of our students' financial situation, many do not have access to extra-curricular activities. In response, our school strives to offer as many opportunities as possible. We have many clubs on campus: chess, archery, martial arts, drone, ping pong, and yearbook club. In addition, we have several student groups that work to create and maintain a positive school culture.
Our staff form authentic, caring and effective relationships with students and create classrooms that respond to the needs of students so they can achieve academic success as well become well-rounded people who care about their community.
My Project
The Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR camera will make all the difference in my students' experience in yearbook club this year. Our yearbook has always been 100% created by students. We went from literally cutting and pasting pictures onto paper to taking pictures with students cellphones. A couple of years ago, we were able to acquire a couple of inexpensive digital cameras, and that has greatly improved our yearbook.
A high quality digital camera with a variety of lenses and extensions will allow students to develop their creativity and learn experience the art of photography.
Our students will be able to experiment with lighting and composition techniques and develop their natural skills and creativity.
In addition, being a part of yearbook club helps students learn how to have patience, learn to meet deadlines, and work with a team for a common goal.
