The yearbook staff at Brandeis High School could greatly benefit from a new computer. The current computer system does not support digital pictures. It is the year 2005 and it is embarrassing for these students to be manually cropping and scanning in old-fashioned film photographs. Many students joined the yearbook staff with the intention that they would gain photography and journalism experience that could help them in their future careers. However, their enthusiasm is dimmed by the antiquated equipment, which the yearbook is currently produced on.
I am an English teacher at Brandeis High School. Brandeis is situated on Manhattan's affluent Upper West Side, yet the student population commutes mainly from the outer boroughs and most are living below the poverty level. Brandeis is a tough school, where violence and disrespect are commonplace. Metal detectors greet the students every morning and security guards are posted throughout the hallways. Despite the sometimes trying environment, many bright and motivated students reach out everyday for a better future. I volunteered to advise the yearbook staff in order to support those students who represent the best and the brightest at the school.
The materials necessary for this project are one Apple Ibook 12" computer. This computer makes for easy importing of digital photographs, as well as simple and effective layout and design of the yearbook pages. There are currently eight students on the yearbook staff and I anticipate much greater interest once our technology is updated. The computer could be used for many years to come. Apple Ibook's are generally regarded as durable student computers with the benefit of a low learning curve, perfect for students at Brandeis with little to no computer experience.
A modern computer would be a great benefit to the students on the Brandeis yearbook staff, as well as the school community at large. My goal for the yearbook is for the students to produce a professional looking yearbook that they can be proud of and simultaneously gain crucial journalism and photography related experience.
