Year-Round Urban Gardening

My students need Outdoor Greenhouses to allow the growth of plants throughout the school year.

My Students

According to the recent School Report Card provided by Chicago Public Schools, 98% of the students at my school receive Free/Reduced Lunch and reside in low-income households. Despite lack of exposure of quality foods in the community, my students are eager to learn more about Agriculture and Food Quality. In the past, we have addressed GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) , Air Quality, Food Quality and Earth Care in the classroom. My students demonstrated strong interest in these subjects. In the classroom, many have created small ecosystems using pots and buckets and many non conventional objects.

My Project

Providing greenhouses in the community of our school, will allow students to Learn more about agriculture, Enrich academic skills and Expose students to fresh produce/plants throughout the year. The construction of a greenhouse at our school will allow students hands-on experience with agriculture on a daily basis. Students will have the opportunity to observe the stages of growth and development of what they grow.

The implementation of Science and Mathematics will be applied to our project.

A rigorous Curriculum that addresses both subjects will be used in conjunction with the project. Students will have readily exposure to fresh produce throughout the school year that they may share with family members and friends in the community.
