My students need basic classroom supplies (counters, Crayola markers, dry erase markers, counting chips and sticky notes) to help with day to day and project based activities. Funding this project will help prepare my classroom to be the best it can be for these incoming students!
Most of my 7th grade Life Science students are considered low income students. Bryan County Middle School is a Title I school meaning most of our students come from families that qualify for free or reduced lunch. I don't want this specification to hinder any of my students' learning. This will alleviate the stress of added expenses for these materials from both the parents and students.
My students are excited to learn about life science in a hands on way and I hope to be able to give them the best opportunity to learn about the world around them in my classroom.
My Project
By giving these students all of these basic materials, it allows the students to feel safe and comfortable in the classroom. Nobody will have to worry that they need to ask for markers for a poster project or scissors and glue for a cut and paste activity. I want the students to all be provided the same opportunity in my classroom, regardless of what materials they are able to provide.
Literacy is a growing issue, especially in the middle grades, and I plan to integrate more reading and literacy in my classroom this year.
With the highlighters students will be able to read scientific papers or journals and highlight key points, parts of the scientific method, or even words they do not know and learn how to use cues from passages to determine the meaning. While making sure the students are learning and enjoying the class, I also like to play review bingo with the students before assessments. The students see it as a game while I see it as a time to gage the students comprehension level of the topic and gage their understanding or misconceptions of a topic.
Funding this project will allow my low income students to focus on their learning and forget the stress of bringing items or materials. I want the students to feel at home in my classroom and the first step in that is to know that I am provided them with the basics and that they have everything they may need when they step through my doors.
