Every child is gifted. They just unwrap their packages at different times.” - Unknown
Many of my scholars are from low-income families, each child bring their own academic abilities into the classroom.
My first grade classroom, it’s a place where they are loved, a place where they can escape some of the baggage they face before coming to school. It’s a place where they are safe and comfortable… It's what I call " a home away from home.”
When I look at my scholars I see sixteen six and seven year olds who are full of excitement, curiosity, and willingness to learn. They love learning anything I put before them regardless of the level of difficulty. As a teacher, my job is to ignite their love of reading and provide them an environment where all of these qualities can be fulfilled. Our school is located in a high poverty area 100% of our scholars qualify for free and reduced -priced lunches.
No matter of their personal discourse and challenges, I’m dedicated to promote a loving and caring environment; with high academic expectations for all my scholars while providing a supportive systems to assure that those expectations are met for every scholar in my classroom.
These games will help my students with Phonological awareness, blending, sounding out letters, decoding and segmenting sounds.
During my ELA block and after our whole group instruction my scholars break off into literacy stations. My literacy stations focus on scholars needing an extension in a skill and scholars with unfinished learning (individual learning plan). We call this time PLT (power learning time) Skills blocks (where scholars focus on their micro-phase or individual targeted skills).
Currently, my centers consist of various activities I purchased from teacherpayteachers and other materiaIs that I have created which becomes very costly because they are expensive. I believe that because these skills are foundational, it is crucial to engage the scholars through hands-on learning.
These literacy materials will help differentiated the reading standard that was taught during our whole group instruction. Thus using these literacy materials, my scholars will grow and move on to their next micro-phase skill and as a overall end goal of each scholar reading on his or her own grade level. In addition, these materials will allow my lessons to be more effective .
Sounds like a lot and it is … But it takes all those strategies for a child to become a proficient reader. Funding this project will greatly impact every scholar in my classroom. Please consider helping me in this endeavor to support my scholars growth through this project!!
