YA Fiction for Struggling Readers

My students need books that they can relate to because they already struggle with reading, so anything that is relevant is good. I put several books in here that students can relate to easily and connect!

My Students

I currently teach in an inner-city school. I teach English, Reading Intervention and AVID. My students in reading intervention struggle with reading, therefore, it's important that I have some relevant and intriguing new books for them to read in my classroom. The more relevant the subject matter, the more likely students are to dive in! My students are the most rewarding part of my job!

These students are students typically slated to fail but who have decided that they will succeed and who are working actively on their reading skills.

Despite their struggles, my students are some of the most determined, hard-working students I have ever had the privilege of being around.

My Project

As I've mentioned, these students already struggle with reading. They don't like to do it because they aren't very good at it. Because of this, I've chosen several books that have a variety of characters in them that my students can relate to.

Students are more apt to respond to literature when they related to the characters.

I have specifically chosen these titles to do just that. I think that if we can get them excited about reading, it will help them grow as readers. We all enjoy reading things we like, so if we can get them reading what they like, then it will help when they have to read things that they don't necessarily want to, but still have to.

I've also included hand-sanitizer for general hygiene purposes. :)
