This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As tough as sixth-grade students can be, they always amaze me. Although they may not want to admit it, they are always seeking knowledge and want to be an active participant in the classroom. As a special education teacher, the tablets would benefit my students who learn differently from others.
I've learned to ignore half the stuff sixth graders say.
They think they are funny, but really they are not. These students come from low-income homes and enter the classroom with emotional needs, little supplies (clothes included), and limited experiences with technology; school is their safety. I've often been called "mom" when they try to call my name and then I see them quickly correcting themselves. With that being said, I want to provide the students the best classroom experiences to be able to continue to succeed.
My Project
Currently one classroom I co-teach with uses literacy centers on a daily basis. There are 2 classroom computers, 1 tablet, and one laptop. However, even at this age students need reminders on how to share. All students learn and work at a different pace and with more technology in the classroom they will be able to continue to work together but at their own comfort level. The "prize" at the end of the writing process (which most of them despise) is publishing their work on the computer. With limited resources only a few students are able to complete this stage. With three more tablets more students will be able to officially publish their work.
Technology changes every day, pretty soon that computer you bought yesterday will be outdated.
At least with the technology that we have in the classroom the students will be able to master the basic techniques of a computer and feel comfortable navigating desktops, laptops, and tablets.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
