Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What kind of joy does music bring to your life? Can you think immediately of your favorite song or performer? This year my students will have a brand new music program for the first time, and with that comes the opportunity for them to create and understand their own musical experiences.

My students attend a public elementary school in a low-income inner city neighborhood, and until now they have had to focus their school time primarily on keeping their math and reading abilities up to standards.

They are finally going to have a music program this year for the first time in our school's history, and students will be able to explore their artistic talents and creativity while learning about the musical traditions and cultures of their friends and peers. The students are so excited to be getting a music class and the chance to explore this new means of expression.

My Project

My students need xylophones which they can all take turns playing in order to help kick start our brand new music program. Xylophones will be the very first pitched instrument in our music classroom which children in the entire school will be able to take turns using in order to fully understand the relationship between pitches in music. Students will be able to accompany their own singing, perform for each other, their families and the community, and utilize the instruments as a tool to help them write their own musical compositions.

Xylophones will truly hook our kids on music and add a tremendous level of engagement to the music classroom.

Students will also practice and enjoy collaborating with each other as they learn how to share and take turns on the instrument.
