Help me give my students the opportunity to continue the music with personal xylophone kits so students within a class won't need to share while learning musical concepts and building brains!
My young musicians are clever, curious, creative, compassionate, and go about everything with such an energetic nature! I teach about twenty classes (around five hundred students) ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in what used to be a small, farming community, but is now growing too rapidly; in a bursting-at-the-seams district that has already been unable to keep up with overcrowding and proper school funding. We are currently a Title I school with a sizable population of free or reduced-price lunch recipients and families that are homeless.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become even more difficult to get my students the delivery of academic lessons and support they need, especially in music, where we are used to getting together to move, play, dance, and sing; music was never meant to be an online subject!
This year some of us will be online and some in person, but all need a good musical education experience!
Thankfully, our school has always been a close-knit and caring community of young musicians and learners and a great place to be a kid as well as an educator.
My Project
My students love to make music while we are together and love using instruments for hands-on experiences. However, since COVID-19, I, as the music teacher, have needed to think out of the box to come up with ways that we can still play music together. This has been a most difficult task to prepare for, and something that I have very few resources available for students to use, as most classroom instruments are large and expensive and not nearly enough to go around with many students needing to share each one when we have played in years before. I still want my young musicians to have authentic experiences by developing social and musical skills through playing, and creating with real instruments! These personal xylophones will help us have a class set so that each student can use their own instrument during each class period and I can sanitize easily between groups using them.
Studies consistently have shown that young people who are taught music have shown to improve their academic, social, and emotional lives in areas of responsibility, perseverance, focus, self-esteem, memory, coordination, logical and spatial thinking, plus proven to highly improve scores in mathematics, language, and science.
What other single activity for kids can you get the most academic bang for your buck? Thank you so kindly for your consideration!
