Xenoblastic, Xylotastic Music

My Students

I teach a very large student body at my school (1000+ students). I gratefully serve daily as their enthusiastic music specialist. My students are comprised of a diverse and eclectic mix of cultures and socioeconomic classes spanning all ages and all stages of academic achievement. They stand as a beautiful celebration of the human spirit and diversity! Through music, my students creatively explore ways to communicate who they are, where they have come from, and share points of light from the journey they are taking. Henry Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." In my classes that is certainly the case!

Music provides me with a wonderful opportunity to help my students develop a healthy sense of self and community through creatively integrated experiences that enhance their ability to learn and grow.

It gives them what they believe is a fun "break" from learning when in fact, they are learning and growing continually as they perform, play, and create in my classroom!

My Project

I can't even begin to describe the flood of creative ideas that are "washing ashore" in my head right now, and the cause is certainly my excitement about being able to use Boomwhacker Xylophones in my music classroom! I'm imagining all kinds of unique cultural connections with rhythm, beat, and music from around the world. I'm also dreaming up performances of folk, classical, country, pop, musical theater, and movie music which will allow students to accompany each other as they play. Simply imagine the boost to a student's self esteem from successfully mastering even one song, let alone many! Boomwhakers will also provide an easy means of experiencing the thrill that comes from composition and arrangement, and as you may well know, there is no greater joy for a teacher than to watch his or her students immerse themselves fully in the creative process.

Boomwhackers draw kids in to the creative process like a magnet.

They offer unique and valuable ways to explore rhythm, beat, musical form and composition. They are also excellent at helping students learn notes and experience the thrill of successful instrument performance at a very reasonable cost. Any teacher will tell you that music bridges a gap sometimes felt between the academic world and the creative one. There should be no gaps. Given all that I've shared, I'm not sure I can find any downside to using Boomwhackers in my music classroom, can you?
