This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse, first grade, integrated, collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although most students come from low-income homes or homes with limited parental school involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day, ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My class of first graders is some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
“A place for everything, and everything in its place.” How many times have we heard that growing up? Organization is an essential skill for students to learn, as it teaches and promotes responsibility and executive functioning. That is why we are requesting a number of items Like storage containers, paper trays, and Kleenex wipes to house student materials and supplies. Students can independently retrieve the materials they need from these containers and trays because they will be organized for them. The yoga strap bands will be used to neatly roll up the mats after we use them during our daily meditation.
While I have very high academic and behavioral expectations of my students, I am well aware that many of them benefit from positive reinforcement and incentives.
Our classroom treasure box is a hot commodity! I am requesting rewards that will appeal to both the girls and boys in the class, including Legos, slime, and Play-Doh, and plenty of sensory fidgets for my special education students.
The feeling of pride in their personal behavior and academic pursuits encourages my students to do their best so that they can earn a trip to the treasure box!
