Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids with a love of learning. Over 90% of my students come from low-socioeconomic families. A large percentage of them meet the definition of homeless. Their parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. They are working necessary jobs for us and for their families. My kindergartners worry about their well being, and yet, they still want to explore, create, read, and write! They want to learn and grow.
During this pandemic, my students are sheltering in place with basic classroom supplies and necessities and some books.
I want them to continue to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time learn language arts, math, science and social studies.
My Project
During this time, students are feeling all sorts of emotions. They are happy to be home with family. They are excited for summer vacation and for school in the fall. They are angry about having to shelter in place. They are concerned and confused. There is a wide range of emotions that they are feeling. They need to know that it is okay to feel this way. They also need to learn some ways to handle that emotion.
These SPOT books help children understand the different emotions they are feeling, learn life skills and learn to take action.
Kids will be given strategies to cope with these emotions or change them. They will begin to understand that they are not alone. Others feel like they do, and it is okay. The Spot books deal with emotions, learning life skills and taking action to make the world better.
I plan to read and record these books to my students so that they can watch and listen to them when they need it over the summer. I also plan to read these stories to my kids in the classroom when we return to school. Sometimes, a story can help you know that you are not alone. After all, they wrote a book about it!
