Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just as a hammer is an essential tool when trying to drive a nail into a wall, "Orff" xylophones with removable bars are the right tool for teaching students how to create beautiful instrumental music during elementary music instruction.
I teach enthusiastic and engaging students who have to overcome incredible economic, linguistic and cultural hurdles in order to become successful students.
At my school we work to build the character, esteem and academic success in all of our students.
Often students like mine, who come from a culture of poverty, are hesitant to try things that they haven't experienced. They are ready to accomplish their dreams if only we can help them reach high enough. Providing enough adequate, pitched elementary percussion instruments will ensure that my students get to immerse themselves in the joys of creating instrumental music together on a regular basis.
My Project
We are requesting that donors help us provide an alto xylophone and xylophone stand in a continued effort to fully voice our "Orff" instrument ensemble. "Orff" style pitched and unpitched percussion instruments are an important part of the elementary general music experience. These provide students with the opportunity to accompany their own singing, develop instrumental technique as well as compose and improvise on simple and durable instruments.
At the heart of any "Orff" ensemble is the xylophone. This project is one part of an ongoing effort through donorschoose.org to provide these instruments for the students at my school.
When my students leave my music classroom at the end of 5th grade I want them to be able to say "yes" to new musical experiences of all kinds.
By providing adequate access to quality xylophones we are ensuring that they have a well-rounded and comprehensive music education that will foster a love of music and of learning for the rest of their lives.
