My students need text sets of novels to compliment our World War II unit. Students will complete a novel study with the Novels, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry and Hiroshima by Laurence Yep. Students.
Students in my classroom participate in rigorous academic activities throughout the instructional day. During this time, they are participating in research, guided inquiry and careful analysis of highly crafted literature and primary resources.
Please consider donating to our project in order to create a class set of each novel for students to use during in class analysis.
Students should have access to these novels in order to read, annotate and refer to during discussions. While I have managed to purchase several copies of each novel on my own, I'm still in need of the additional copies noted in this project in order to have a complete class set.
Thank you so much for considering donating to this project! My students and I sincerely appreciate any help that you provide in helping us obtain these materials.
My Project
Students need novel sets to complete our WWII unit that integrates ELA and Social Studies concepts to develop a deep understanding of multiple perspectives during this time period.
Through the careful analysis of these novels, students will develop a more holistic understanding of the events of the time period and how writer's use literary elements to shape demonstrate perspective in historical fiction.
Some of the tasks we complete in association with these novels include comparing and contrasting characters, analysis of repeated objects, interpretation of symbolism, analysis of characters change as it relates to theme, use of Socratic seminar in class discussions and ultimately a student-led debate that centers around the value of these texts to support student understanding of this time period.
