This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

About My Students

The West Side Academy High School Green Team has been active and growing since the 2016-2017 school year. This year we are working to expand our garden program from the outside to the inside of the school. We would like to create a Hydroponic Garden outside of the principal's office. We received a Green Apple Day of Service Grant to help make this dream come true.

This is the sixth year of our WSA Green Panthers and we have won State recognition for the past two years earning Michigan Emerald School status. We would like to continue our work into the next.

Students will work with the Environmental Science teacher to create a hydroponic system in front of the Principal's office. Students will learn about the nutrients in the water and keeping balance as systems change. Students will work collaboratively to design and build the system, taking ownership for their school and the beautification thereof.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to accomplish the goal of making the school look pretty. We want to put something nice in front of the office for guest to see and put nice things back into the school. The school currently looks very plain and military. This project will help bring life into the school.

We will I will lead the team to making the best water system for the school. It's about management and managing how things go and creating a checklist. The seniors will act as role models for guiding and completing the project. They can mentor students and help them get things done.

The project is important because we are learning about water quality and plant. We like seeing something calming and wait in tranquil place before seeing the principal. We can expand it to other areas of the school. This can help with student coping skills making the school and community a calmer place.
