My Students

Compound? Complex? Simple? Compound-complex? Sentence structures can be confusing even for the most dedicated student. My students need some help with these concepts.

I have a wide variety of very diverse students, mostly juniors and seniors in high school.

I have Advanced Placement students, remedial students, who need extra help to pass the AIMS, the AZ state test required for graduation, and all levels of students in between, some with learning disabilities. Within my students' complexity and variety of learning styles, all my students share a problem with understanding different sentence structures. My students enjoy interactive learning activities, thriving in such an environment. They work well together and work to learn and help each other learn no matter what their learning style is!

My Project

My students are all working hard to try and improve their writing skills, and the ability to vary their syntax and control the English language is imperative to their success at reaching their goal, whether it is to pass the AP exam, or the AIMS, or simply write ideas that are understood. With a classroom set of dry-erase boards, students can practice these sentences one type at a time with my direct supervision. When they need to learn and correct an error, correcting their mistake on the dry-erase board will be simple, and students learn well when they have the chance to correct an error. They will also be able to hold up their boards to share their writing with the class, providing a wonderful opportunity for students to not only share what they have written, but also reinforce to fellow classmates principles of writing. These dry-erase boards hold a myriad of learning activities and opportunities for improving student writing.

Writing concepts, specifically that of syntax and voice, can be difficult for students to master.

Using dry-erase boards can greatly impact and improve a student's writing because of one-on-one instructional possibilities, partner-work possibilities, and large group-work possibilities. Donating to this project can directly impact a student's writing skills and therefore their performance on high stakes exams, exams that determine high school graduation, college admittance, and college credit.
